FVG Notes 3/5
Marking an FVG is only the beginning. Once price returns, the state of the gap changes, and that interaction adds information that was not available when the imbalance first formed.
An untouched FVG is still only a record of the original displacement. It shows where price moved quickly through an area, but it does not yet show how that area behaves when price comes back.
The first state is a partial fill.
Price enters the imbalance but does not trade through the entire area. Part of the original gap remains untouched. That does not automatically make the FVG stronger or weaker. It simply means the market interacted with part of the area while leaving part of the original imbalance unresolved.
The depth and quality of that interaction matter. Price may briefly enter the gap and leave, move deeply into it, or spend several candles overlapping inside it. These outcomes describe different interactions, even when all of them are technically called partial fills.
The second state is a full fill.
Price trades through the entire original imbalance. The geometric gap is no longer present in its original form because the whole area has now been revisited.
That does not mean the price area becomes permanently meaningless. It means the original condition has changed. The FVG began as a record of fast movement through an area; after price has traded back through the entire zone, that specific imbalance can no longer be treated as untouched.
Keeping the original box marked with the same state would make the map inaccurate.
The third concept is respect.
Respect is not the same as fill.
Fill describes how much of the original area price traded through. Respect describes how price behaved during and after the interaction.
An FVG can be partially filled and produce a readable response. It can be fully filled and still influence behaviour around the area. It can also be entered repeatedly, filled with overlapping price action, and produce no clear response at all.
This is why “filled” and “respected” should not be treated as interchangeable labels. One measures coverage. The other describes behaviour.
For me, a respected FVG is simply one where the interaction remained readable. Price reached the area, produced a visible response, and moved away cleanly enough to add information to the sequence.
That still does not turn the gap into a signal. It only shows that the area affected price behaviour in a visible way.
The common mistake is freezing every FVG in its original state. A gap is marked as fresh, price returns, trades halfway through it, returns again, and eventually crosses the full area — yet the original box and label remain unchanged.
That is not state tracking. It is refusing to update the map.
A cleaner classification is:
Untouched: price has not returned.
Partially filled: part of the original imbalance remains.
Fully filled: the entire geometric gap has been revisited.
Respected: the interaction produced a readable response.
These labels describe what happened. They do not predict what happens next.
The objective is not to make an FVG appear more important. It is to keep the map honest as new information appears.
